Our History

HISTORY OF THE PASTORS

In the 1960s, the church covenant was filed in Oklahoma City, and Mount Hermon was formally organized as an interdenominational church. Brother Ivan Crossno served as the full-time pastor until 1971, followed by Brother Larry O’Kelly from 1971 to 1973. Dr. L.A. (Audrey) Thomas then took the helm, remaining until 1995. Brother Larry Kingfisher pastored from 1995 until his passing in 2003. Youth Pastor James Bryant stepped in as pastor from 2004 to 2011, succeeded by Brandon McCombs from 2011 to 2013. Dr. Gene Fulcher served as Senior Pastor from March 2014 until March 2016. Jeremy Colvard began as the Interim Pastor in July 2016 and was officially hired as the Senior Pastor in November of the same year. In July of 2021, Jake Johnson took over the role of shepherd to our flock. Jake was with us until April of 2023. Brother Gary Bishop filled in as a guest teacher until Pastor Wesley Clark filled the position in June of 2024.

HISTORY OF BUILDING PROJECTS

In 1970, the church expanded to include restrooms, a kitchen, and classrooms. The sanctuary was enlarged in 1977, adding a baptistry, pastor’s study, and a baby room. Due to growing needs, additional classrooms, a larger nursery, and two more restrooms were later added. The church parsonage was completed in 1983. In 1990, the congregation decided to brick the church building, and by 1991, the Family Life Center (FLC) was built, featuring a kitchen, four classrooms, and a gymnasium. A larger sanctuary was constructed mostly by the congregation in 1997. The current sanctuary was completed in 2003 due to continued growth. In 2007, the youth program had outgrown its space, prompting the construction of a two-story addition to the FLC. This new Youth Center was dedicated in April 2008.

God has continually blessed Mount Hermon, providing both the talent and the financial resources needed for these endeavors. All glory, honor, and praise are due to Him!

CHURCH GOVERNMENT

Pastor

We believe that the Pastor holds the chief leadership role in the church. The Pastor is called and appointed by God to serve as the overseer of the flock. This calling is confirmed through a majority vote by the church congregation. The Pastor’s tenure can be terminated either by a majority vote from the Elders or through a written resignation.

Elders

We believe in and practice church governance as outlined in God’s Holy Word. Elders are men of good reputation, filled with the Holy Spirit and wisdom. They are appointed as overseers of the church with responsibilities that include teaching, protecting, exhorting, edifying, and discipling. They are entrusted with spiritual leadership and development in all areas, such as evangelism, missions, stewardship, and church discipline.

Deacons

We believe in an appointed board of men, also of good reputation and filled with the Holy Spirit and wisdom, who serve in the role of Deacons. This board oversees the business aspects of the church, including finances, property maintenance, social projects like caring for widows and orphans, and building projects.

Membership

We believe that membership is open to individuals who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Candidates for membership should either be open to believer’s baptism by immersion or have already undergone this experience prior to attending Mt. Hermon Church. Those who have had a similar experience in a church of like faith and order are accepted based on their statement of previous experience. The church neither requires nor grants church letters.
